This structure is located at Camp Orkila on Orcas Island. The YMCA asked that the building would provide an educational space for individual groups of students, coming year round from the Western Washington school districts to visit. The building and displays are designed to allow a teacher to easily give an impromptu lecture on the salmon life cycle and other marine life, and more importantly, give the students a chance to see and touch local sea creatures. In keeping with the existing structures of the historic camp, the timber-framed building is built employing natural materials, including lodgepole timbers, cedar shingles and decking. Amenities include biology centers, marine touch tanks, and a sunken amphitheater, which gives an underwater view into the salmon spawning pond. Mature salmon exit this pond via an adjoining fish ladder, and with luck, return several years later to begin the entire cycle again. |
