This 1906 house in the Greenlake area of Seattle was designed for a couple and their small daughter. Our clients sought to increase the size of their house to create comfortable spaces for family gathering, dining and of course, cooking. We established a strong link with the yard, which the owners plan to use to grow plants for their edible flower business. We placed the kitchen at the core of the house, opening on to the dining and family room, as well as linking the old portion of the house with the new. Care was taken to restore key aspects of the house back to earlier form. The introduction of some exterior wood details gives a sense of how the house existed in the early 1900's, while a standing seam metal roof over the low-slung porch shows a clear reflection of the new house.

The project increases the current house to include a larger master bedroom with master bath and updated bedrooms. New finishes, ranging from maple cabinets to marble counters, give the kitchen a bright, clean feeling. Custom cabinetry throughout the house vastly improves the storage typical to a turn of the century house. New windows have been carefully placed to allow for maximum visual connections between interior spaces and the exterior gardens.
