This residence, located a couple of miles from downtown Seattle, is set on a park-like piece of property, which includes a natural waterfall. When we began the project, the house was a low ceilinged, crumbling stucco rambler, reminiscent of a sprawling California bungalow. The client, who was currently living in a 3 story home in a busy Greenlake neighborhood, was determined to keep all living spaces within a step or two of the outside gardens. While much of the original structure was replaced, the overall layout, in some cases radically reworked, was honored. Two additional wings were added to house a new living room, media room, and spa. The low, dark spaces were reconfigured as spaces with large, light filled volumes, employing high windows and vaulted ceilings. The raw, natural materials, combined with the scale of the new spaces, are what gives the home a lodge-like feeling. The carefully worked, recycled timbers, granite floors, and stone fireplaces evoke the historic National Parks lodges that the client greatly admires. |
